The final episode of TOS: Turnabout Intruder. Nothing else comes close.
I believe with the fervor of a thousand dying suns that CBS filmed and showed this episode specifically to discourage another letter-writing campaign.

@mwlucas @thedaemon Roddenberry was an uncontrolled, raging misogynist even for his time and it was obvious throughout, but nowhere moreso than when he got it in his head to have someone write a damn gender roles/dysphoria episode.

True, but one detail:
He had been booted off the show for season 3. He had nothing to do with this episode.
I sincerely believe this was CBS' effort to keep the fans from mounting another letter campaign.

There are things in TOS that you kind of have to shrug and say "Well, it was the sixties, they didn't know any better." Like--if Sulu was openly gay, the show would not have been made. Okay.
Then there are things that they knew were fucked up then, and did them anyway.
"Code of Honor" was also a horror. I'd say it was a less horrid horror--mind you, if TI is a 10, CoH was a solid 9.8.
